9. Feedback

1. Deadline to join
Technically, the last day to join a club sport for the fall-2007 semester was this past Sunday. Since I forgot to send out a reminder, I will try to extend the deadline to this Friday, September 28. Please make sure you fill out a club sports athelete's information card and hand it to Emily Chan so you can be added to the club roster.  According to club sports rules, we cannot let you play if you are not on our roster, and we will not be able to accept new members until the Spring semester.

2. Reminders
Again, please check your name off on the sign-in sheet posted on the squash court window before you start playing. I can remember some of your names and check you off, but I don’t want to have to call attendance at each practice. Signing in is really important because it tells Coles that we need more space/court time!

3. T shirts:
Deadline for ordering a t-shirt is this Friday. I will place the order this weekend. No money, no shirt. T shirt designs are here:

4. Court Times this week:
Due to a volleyball tournament, we have very much abbreviated setup times this week. Friday: 8-10:30 pm. Team will use one court for mixed games. There will be no setups on Sunday.

Please note, in the future on Sundays 5-6 pm, all four courts will be reserved for team practice. After that, all four courts will be open for free play. On Fridays, the team may need to make use of the first two courts for challenges and training, but I will do my best to keep all four courts open for free play. Please remember to use the sign up sheets to get on a court, cross your name off when you play and call up the next set of people when you’ve finished. I will have court usage guidelines on the sign-up sheets so let’s please remember to follow them. When all four courts are open, I recommend that the more advanced players sign up to play on the first two courts for more even games.

I have posted the current schedule for this semester and any cancellations I know of on our webpage here.

5. Team Practice and Coaching
The idea of team practice is to have some open time (somewhat moderated by me) for those interested in competing and improving their game to practice and drill without the pressure to play games given space constraints. During training, we will be doing racket drills, 2 on 1 practice, and a little bit of footwork and rotation style for the doubles. Each week there will be a specific agenda for the training session and different drill options depending on your skill level (You can decide what you need or I can help you decide). If there are any specific drills that you think would be particularly beneficial to the team, please let me know so that I can fit them in and get a good demo going.

Training is not mandatory but if you show up during team training time, training will be your only option. For now training is open to anyone on a ladder/interested in competing extramurally. Depending on how many people show up for this first training, I may have to set a quota based on the ladders.

Unfortunately, we were unable to sign-on any of the coaches we were hoping to get to help us train. I will continue to be in charge of most of the organizational and logistical aspects of the club/team. I will do my best to arrange training so that it can be as beneficial as possible for all. We have many experienced players on our team this year, so we should be able to help ourselves improve.

6. Endurance training
Anybody interested in endurance training? For those that are interested, we can try to do a group endurance training session before practice on Sundays from 4:10-4:50. Hopefully it doesn’t sound too scary, as this is meant to be fun and to get you energized for badminton. Either be in the field house or at the track on the roof, we will do stretches, running, lines, footwork, lunge things, etc. I will post a sign-up sheet on Friday and depending on the level of interest, we can start that before our next Sunday practice.

7. Team, ladders, games.
The singles and doubles ladders are set for now.  I have posted them on our webpage here. Please let me know if I accidentally forgot about you. It will be updated throughout the year as challenges are made under “The Team”. We will work on the mixed ladder this Friday and also fit in those who are interested but not yet placed on the singles and doubles (including non-students).

If you are in the top 10 for singles or top 5 for doubles, please let me know if you can’t make any of the first three tournaments. The away games will all be day trips. We will leave 2 hours before the times given below and return in the evening. I will do challenges for the Yale game on Oct  12 and 14. I will send more information about the challenges later. For now I would focus on training and improvement and not worry about the ladder too much. Many of you had very close games and constantly challenging every week would not be productive.

Sat Oct 20, Yale at Yale 2-6:30
Sat Nov 3 Columbia/Cornell at NYU 3-7:30
Sun Nov 11 Princeton @ Princeton (note change!) 12-6:30
Sunday Dec 9 Yale @ NYU 4-7:30
Sun Feb 17 Columbia @ Columbia
Sun Feb 24 Princeton @ NYU

8. Post practice hunger:
Usually a group of us get bubble tea or food after practice. If you do stick around until the end and would be getting food on your own otherwise, come find us. It’s a great way to socialize and get to know your fellow badminton buddies. If you have suggestions of cheap tasty nearby places, let me know and I can advertise post-practice dinners in the weekly e-mail.

9. Please feel free to send me any feedback, suggestions, comments. Remember to reply to ec1214@med.nyu.edu (and don’t just click reply, as that will send your message to the list-serve).

I have done my best to order you based on how you've played the past few days. This is by no means a static list and you can challenge up and down throughout the semester. Many of you also play at similar levels and it was difficult to base the ladder on a few games. If you have a star next to your name at the bottom of the
it means you have not played anybody yet. If you have two stars next to your name, it means I'm not sure if you are still interested in playing that event. Please see me Friday or contact me (ec1214@med.nyu.edu) or I will remove you from the list.

Last Day to Join

The deadline to join for the fall-2007 semester will be this Friday, September 28. Please make sure you fill out a club sports athelete's information card and hand it to Emily Chan so you can be added to the club roster.  According to club sports rules, we cannot let you play if you are not on our roster, and we will not be able to accept new members until the Spring semester.

Setups this week

There will be setups this week.
Friday: 7-10:30pm
Sunday: 5-7:30pm

Please remember to check off your name on the sign in sheet (taped to the
glass window on the squash courts) before you start playing. If you aren't
on the list, you still need to fill out a club sports white card.

If there are more people than courts, please use the sign up sheets. Cross
off your names when you play and call the next people up after your game or
15-20 minutes of free play. Try to stay near the court if you know your name
is coming up so that you don't accidentally get skipped.

We will continue to rank people for the singles ladder. I will also partner
people up for those who need partners so that you can start playing together
and we'll hopefully start ranking the doubles ladder on Sunday. I am sending
out a second e-mail to those trying out for the team. Please e-mail me if
you do not receive my e-mail so that I can add you to the team list.

For those of you that would like to learn how to score a game, either myself
or someone who knows will give a brief overview around 7:15 on Friday so try
to group around the far court around then.

For those of you that would like to order a t-shirt, please give $15 to
Emily. I plan on placing the order by the end of this month.

Purchasing Badminton Supplies

If you are a beginner or intermediate player, you can go to Paragon Sports. The address is 867 Broadway, New York, NY 10003 (cross street is 18th Street, on the Northwest corner of Union Square). You should be able to get a decent racket for 40 bucks. I would also recommend purchasing grip for your racket. They tend to come in packs of three (~$5) so find some friends to split it with. : )

If you are an advanced player looking for higher quality rackets, try the NYC Badminton Club, Just stop by during their club hours or e-mail Veronica Wu at info@nycbadminton.com. They also sell shoes and restring rackets. If you tell them you are from NYU badminton, the price should be $20 for YonexBG65 strings or $15 if you have your own strings.

More Court Space!

Okay, not really. But for those of you interested in just recreational play, I would highly recommend showing up a little later to our badminton sessions. If you only plan to play for an hour or two, you can get a much better hour of play in at 9:00pm on Fridays rather than at 7:00pm (We have setups from 7-10:30pm on Fridays). Sunday setups are 5-7:30pm.

I also wanted to remind everyone that this is a recreational club. You are not required to show up to every practice (though as a club it would be nice to see your faces more than once or twice a semester. : ) I will have a sign in sheet at each practice so please sign in before you start playing, and you are free to leave whenever you want (I know 3 hours of badminton can be a lot!).

Team attendance requirements will be detailed shortly.

Mailing List

An NYU mailing list has been created for the our club! Everyone (hopefully) has been added who submitted a white card to the first meeting or e-mailed me otherwise. You can add yourself to the mailing list through your NYU home account by going to "Browse and Subscribe to a new list" on your NYU home page when you first log-in. I will e-mail out to the list if there are any last minute cancellations to our Friday or Sunday setups.

This is a moderated list, but you can also send an e-mail out to the club to nyubadminton@lists.nyu.edu (for social events, upcoming nearby tournaments, etc). But please still direct all individual questions to Emily at ec1214@med.nyu.edu.

Setups on Sunday 9/16

Hi Everyone,

We had a great turnout at our first meeting. We do have badminton setups this Sunday from 5-7:30 so come on down to Coles for some more badminton fun. For those of you that couldn't make it to Friday's meeting, please join us on Sunday and remember to fill out a white card and give it to Emily.

I know there were a lot of people and not that many courts, but hopefully the system was efficient enough to give everyone a good amount of court time. Feel free to make use of the volleyball space and squash courts if they aren't being used. It is important that you manage the courts on your own. There will be sign up sheets next to each court. Play a game up to 21 (new rally system) or practice for 15-20 minutes. You can put your name on as many lists as you want. But if your name is called and you are already on another court, it will be crossed off the list. Finally, please cross your name off the list when you're done and call up the next people on the list. Generally, let's try keep the first two courts for more advanced players and the far two courts for the beginning players. The first two courts will also be the courts used for team practice and coaching in the first hour of each session.

For those of you interested in the team, please try to attend this Sunday's practice as well. More information about the tournaments will be presented and we will also start forming the ranking ladders for the team.

Have a great weekend!

1st Meeting Reminder

Hello!

Thanks for your interest in the NYU Badminton Club. Our first meeting will be this Friday at 7:00pm. We meet at Coles in the Field House (downstairs where you went for the club fair, next to the squash courts).

To speed up the process, please print/fill out the following club sports membership form and bring it with you to the meeting: http://www.nyu.edu/athletics/clubs/WhiteCard.pdf

Shuttles will be provided, but I would recommend bringing your own racket because we only have a limited number to lend out. Please leave your bags/belongings in the locker room. You can borrow a lock with your NYU purple card from the equipment room window located near the elevator/stairs.

If you can’t make the meeting on Friday, but would still like to join the club or team, please send me an e-mail and I will keep you on our e-mail list.

There will be no club membership fee this semester. However if you would like a club tshirt, please bring $15. Our tentative tshirt design is located on our webpage.

Please check out website at www.nyubadminton.info for more updates and club guidelines. Feel free to e-mail Emily (ec1214@med.nyu.edu) if you have any questions.

See you Friday!

NYU Badminton Club proposed constitution

This is the proposed NYU Club Constitution. As the club is still in its nascent stages we are still making modifications, so please send us your comments, concerns, feedback.  (to ec1214@med.nyu.edu)

The NYU Badminton Club Constitution

Written May 9, 2007

Article I - Purpose

The purpose of the NYU Badminton Club is to attract and assemble badminton enthusiasts into an organization that promotes awareness to the sport and university by providing to its members a way to maintain health, meet other players, compete, and have fun.

The badminton program is divided into both a competitive team and a recreational club, both supported by the NYU Athletics Club Sports organization.  The team and club work in close conjunction to provide a richer relationship between their members and with the sport.

Article II - Club Membership

The NYU Badminton Club is an equal rights and equal opportunity organization that does not tolerate discrimination.

To be eligible for club membership, one must be an NYU undergraduate student, graduate student, faculty member, or a Coles alumni member. To be recognized as a full club member, one must understand the guidelines of the NYU Club Sport Handbook and have submitted the NYU Student Club Sport Athlete Information Form.  Membership fees are due at the start of each semester and their value may fluctuate depending on the year’s budget and are estimated by the current coach and president.  Club members should be knowledgeable of the rules of the sport, but are welcome to join without any previous badminton experience.  Members must show courtesy to other players, be respectful of arrangements made by the coach and club officers, and wear proper attire.
Membership to the NYU Badminton Club entails benefits such as access to the court set-ups, use of shuttlecocks for games, access to professional coaching, access to the club mailing list, restring discounts, a chance to experience the sport with other players, and invitation to social activities.

Article III - Team Division

To represent the NYU Badminton Team in intercollegiate tournaments, one must first be a club member and a fulltime graduate or undergraduate student.  Tryouts are based on a ladder system.  The ladder order for each category (MS, MD, WS, WD, and MD) will be determined at the beginning of the semester.  Players may place themselves on ladders they wish to compete in. Players may move up and down the ladder by arranging a challenge with the player immediately above them.  When a tournament is scheduled, the team will generally take the highest-ranked players who are available for the meet.  Challenges can be made throughout the year, but no challenges can be made within the week before a tournament. Challenges must be reported to the coach and team captains. The ladder will be updated monthly on the club webpage. The NYU Badminton Team competes on an annual basis in the Northeast Intercollegiate Badminton League of the Southwest division and also competes with local teams.

Article IV - Meetings

Practices and meetings will be held when the badminton courts are available.  Notice of special meetings will be delivered via the membership mailing list.

Article V - Executive Board

Club officer positions include a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and Webmaster.
The president must direct the organizational responsibilities of the club including team tournaments. If a coach resigns, the president must appoint a new coach.
The vice president will assist in the president’s duties and keep club and team records.
The secretary will notify club members about changes and additions to the club schedule through weekly e-mails.
The treasurer will manage the club budget and prepare monthly reports.  He or she must work in close connection with the coach who will provide the upcoming year’s budget estimate.
The Webmaster will be in charge of updating the club website.
If an office position becomes vacant, the current president will appoint a replacing officer.  If it is the president who resigns, then the vice president will become the new president and that person will appoint a new vice president.

Article VI - Elections

The office positions listed in Article IV will be elected every year starting on the third club meeting of the spring semester.

Any badminton club member who has been a member of the club for at least one semester may run for one of these positions but only the coach, team members, and current Executive Board officers are qualified to elect.  The reason for this is that there are certainly club-only members who are competent enough to hold the office position, but the coach, team, and Executive Board constitute the body with the most thorough understanding of how the team works and how it will be guided and represented by the next elected Executive Board.  Elected officers must be able to carry out their duties for the entirety of the following academic year.

Elections will be conducted by having each candidate within the club state his or her running position on the election board.  Afterwards, each person within the electing body will cast their vote for each officer position and the winning candidates will commence with their one-year tenure.  Any officer may be elected to their office position or any other position for a consecutive, unlimited number of years.

Article VII - Funds

The coach and president will handle the allocation of funds.  Club members who have suggestions or concerns about the allocation of funds should consult the coach and Executive Board.

Article VIII - Affiliations

The NYU Badminton Club is affiliated with the NYU Athletics Club Sports program.  The club also has a close working relationship with the NYC Badminton Club.

Article IX - Ratification

The coach, president, and vice president of the 2007 NYU Badminton Club will approve the Constitution.

Article X - Amendments

Any badminton club member may present an amendment to the constitution.  The club member must submit the amendment to the current president who must address it before the following club meeting.  At that meeting a vote will be held by all present club members.  The amendment will be passed if there is a majority vote or dropped if there is not.  If the amendment is dropped, the amendment may be presented again after a full year.  If the vote is hung half and half, then there will be a revote at the next meeting until it is concluded.
